As a Teacher

G.N.Balasubramaniam (Jan. 6th, 1910 - May 1st, 1965)

G.N.B. AND HIS DISCIPLES

In the recent history of Karnatak music, nobody has had the unique distinction of creating a sishya paramapara so large and of such high quality as GNB. Two factors were responsible for this splendid achievement-one was the irresistible style of the master which made all musicians in the making flock to him involuntarily and follow his " bani " faithfully as direct disciples or simply as Ekaliva sishyas. Great minds are rich in radiating force, not only exerting power but communicating and even creating it. Secondly, it was the genuine consideration GNB had for the younger musicians and the wholehearted and unstinted manner he taught them. GNB was so confident about his capacity and skill that he never had any reservations or hesitation in imparting whatever he knew in an open and amiable way. The sincerity and understanding on the part of so great a personality as GNB was naturally reflected back as respectful admiration, loyalty and faithful adherence to his style from his many disciples.
